Baby-led weaning (BLW) is a method of starting solid food for infants that emphasizes allowing them to feed themselves with finger foods, rather than spoon-feeding pureed or mashed foods. The idea behind BLW is to let the baby explore different textures and flavors, encouraging self-feeding and developing their motor and oral skills. It is recommended to start with soft, manageable foods like steamed vegetables, pieces of fruit, or lightly toasted bread, and avoid high-risk foods like nuts, popcorn, and hard candy. It’s important to closely supervise the baby during mealtime and ensure a safe eating environment.

Here are some simple and healthy recipes for baby-led weaning:

  1. Steamed Vegetables: Simply steam carrots, broccoli, sweet potato, or any other vegetable until tender and cut into manageable sticks or pieces for the baby to hold and eat.
  2. Soft-Boiled Eggs: Boil an egg for 6-7 minutes, peel, and cut into quarters for the baby to pick up and eat.
  3. Avocado Toast: Toast a slice of whole grain bread and spread mashed avocado on top.
  4. Banana Oat Pancakes: Mix together 1 mashed banana, 1 egg, and 1/4 cup of oats. Cook spoonfuls of the mixture in a lightly oiled pan until golden on both sides.
  5. Applesauce pancakes: Mix 1tbsp homemade applesauce, 1 egg and 1/4 cup of oat flour. Cook spoonful of mixture in a lightly buttered pan until golden on both sides.
  6. Baked Sweet Potato Fries: Slice a sweet potato into sticks, drizzle with a little oil and bake in the oven at 400°F until crispy.
  7. Mini Frittatas: Beat 2 eggs with a little milk, pour into a muffin tin with some cooked vegetables and cheese, and bake in the oven until set.
  8. BLW rice fritters – An easy and healthy recipe using rice flour makes a perfect baby led weaning recipe for babies.
