Best Rice Porridge for Babies

Rice Porridge or Rice Kanji is an ideal first food for babies when they start solids. Easy to swallow, easy to digest and less likely to cause any allergies.

  • 2 cups Rice
  • 5 cups Water
  • 1 tbsp Clarified Butter (Ghee) optional
  • 1 tbsp Cumin powder (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Pepper powder (optional)


  • Wash and soak rice for an hour. Alternately, you can also choose to dry roast rice in medium flame instead of soaking it.
  • Grind the soaked or roasted rice witha quick pulse and cook it on a medium flame. Add more water as needed and cook till the rice is cooked well.
  • Add ghee and cumin powder optionally before serving it to you kid.
  • Instant Pot Congee Recipe - To make this healthy congee in an instant pot, add soaked rice and water and cook in a pressure cook mode for 2 minutes in an instant pot.
  • Once the pressure is released, mash the cooked rice and add more water and let it come to a boil and come to a porridge consistency.


  • You can dry roast and powder the rice which can be stored for up to a month.
  • Soaking or roasting rice makes it super soft and easy to be cooked.
  • You can add salt to toddlers 12 months+.
  • Rice porridge thickens after it cools down. It is a good idea to make it a little watery consistency.
